Guest Keynote: Midsize Enterprise IT: A Fundamental Shift in Focus

For most of the history of IT, midsize enterprise investment has been driven primarily by the development and deployment of the great database systems of record: financials, HR, order processing, inventory, customer relationship, supply chain, product life cycle, and the like. Data centers, servers, clients, networks, databases, analytics, tools and technologies—all drew their ultimate ROI from the quality and productivity gains achieved by automating the various functions of the corporation via one or more of these systems of record. Today, as we stand on the verge of the next decade, that work is largely done (indeed, has been done for some time), and while maintaining it will consume much of the IT budgets for years to come, it no longer will drive new investment, and it will no longer engage the business side of the house in the IT dialog. All of which begs the following questions: What will? and What impact will that have on IT organizations and the vendors who serve them? The short answer to this question is next-generation communication and collaboration applications to address the looming, worldwide white-collar productivity crisis.

Emerging Trends and Technologies in BI

BI will experience extensive innovation and transformation in the near future. In this presentation, we will discuss the disruptive effect of -- and the best ways to leverage -- emerging technologies, such as integrated search, interactive visualization, in-memory analytics, predictive analytics and software as a service (SaaS), to build more-powerful, user-friendly BI applications. Key Issues: What are the key trends that will drive pervasive BI adoption and usage? Which are the most important emerging BI technologies, and which vendors will provide them? How can organizations begin melding emerging technologies into existing tools and infrastructure?

System Management on an IT Budget

2009 Infrastructure and Operations budgets are flat or moderately down from 2008, however IT managers must continue to support the business during this economic downturn. In this session, we’ll discuss IT infrastructure and operations cost optimization by looking at ways to support the business on a tight budget, and how IT can be used to reduce energy costs and get the most out of existing assets. Unified Communications and Collaboration: The Next Strategic Advantage Jay Lassman, Research Director, Gartner Increasingly, organizations that have adopted Unified Communications and Collaboration (UCC) consistently report significant improvements in employee collaboration and productivity. This has not gone unnoticed by vendors such as Cisco Systems, Oracle and Microsoft, which have been adding collaboration services to their UC portfolios. As a result, it’s important for midsize enterprises to recognize how to leverage current and future UCC investments. This presentation will answer the following questions: What are the benefits of UCC? What are the UCC market dynamics? How can midsize organizations develop a strategy for migrating to UCC?

Blades, Virtualization and Rack Servers - When Do They Make Sense for Midsize Enterprises

This session explores the applicability to midsize enterprises of blade and server virtualization technologies and examines them in context to each other and to rack-based servers as alternatives. The relative strengths of each of these technologies will be explored and recommendations will be provided as to when one may be better than another and when they may be used most effectively in combination. Also, the server market in the United States in terms of midsize enterprises will be explored as a frame of reference for the growth of server blades and virtualization. Key Issues: 1. When does a blade server form factor make better sense than a rack server and vice-versa? 2. In what situation does virtualization make more sense than blade servers and when should they be used together for maximum advantage? 3. How will server blades and virtualization evolve over time?

E-Mail in the Cloud: Pros and Cons

The hottest question in email today is whether or not to move to a hosted or SaaS provisioning model. Opportunities exist for cost savings, better uptime, larger stores and the ability to avoid large scale upgrades. But these benefits don't accrue to all companies, and more custom needs for archival, encryption and content control may go unmet in the cloud. This presentation will answer the following questions: When does email SaaS make sense and not make sense? What are the vendor dynamics driving the market? What are the pitfalls in moving email to the cloud?

Building the Business Case for BI

Given the current economic client, BI Leaders are increasingly being asked to justify BI investments with a solid business case. This gives BI leaders an opportunity to craft a BI strategy that is instrumental to the organization’s business model. This presentation will explore key aspects of a BI business case from recruiting business sponsors to ensuring adoption from the user community. Several real world case studies will be discussed to demonstrate the business benefits of BI. Key Issues: • Crafting a BI strategy that’s instrumental to the business model. • Recruiting sponsors from the lines of business. • Identifying the business benefits of BI based on risk, cost, and growth.

Cost Optimization: Drama, Predicaments and Opportunities

The best IT leaders in large and small organizations will be challenged by the pressures put upon their IT budgets due to economic uncertainty. Some organizations will cut costs across the board, some will optimize their IT environments, and others will have limited ability to cut anything at all without changing the way the work is done. Once IT organizations cycle through the typical cost savings measures, the hard work of collaboration with business partners must ensue to meet cost, expense and productivity expectations to meet new business demands. For some IT organizations, this will mean switching gears from delivering world class IT services to being a cost leader in their industry, where service levels are changed to set expectations in times of austerity. • What is the Gartner Framework for Cost Optimization and how should IT leaders use this to make cost savings decisions? • What are the best practices for cost savings within IT, IT procurement and joint business and IT cost savings? • How can IT organizations prioritize the areas of largest cost savings benefit to the enterprise and how does this relate to risk and time to benefit?
