General Session - States Rights: Technologies driving state infrastructures

Moderator: Lawrence Walsh, VARBusiness Editor
States budgets are strapped for cash. Vital public programs—public safety, education, health and human services, public works, etc.—are frequently challenged for funding because of the lack of resources and dollars. Increasingly, states are turning to IT systems to squeeze efficiencies out of their bureaucracies, enabling agencies and departments to do more with less. A panel of state CIOs, solution providers and vendors will look at the leading technologies that states needed to succeed.

5:00 pm - 5:45 pm
2 Concurrent Sessions

(1) – Grant Wasn't Just a President
Moderator: Don Dickson, Market Access
Government agencies on all levels are strapped for conventional forms of revenue—taxes, fines, fees, tariffs, etc. Government grants are a tremendous source of funding for everything from public works projects to homeland security efforts. Solution providers can use grants to help get their prospects the money they need for IT projects and, in the process, become a deeper trusted advisor. In this session, government solution providers will learn the five essential elements of successful government grant writing.

(2) – The ABCs of the Education Channel
Moderator: Sean Burke, GovPlace
There was a time that education served as the most lucrative and least bureaucratic of the public sector channel. But with E-Rate stumping the most savvy of integrators and with the large direct market resellers, the small solution provider and even the government's own service agencies all competing for a piece of the pie, education may be as much a challenge for the channel as the Department of Defense. Sean Burke, president of 2005 Editor's Choice Award recipient Govplace, will moderate a panel discussion that focuses on the many issues that face solution providers selling into K-12 and higher education. Learn how to properly navigate the system to protect your own investment, juggle the federal grants and programs often tied to payment, and meet the IT requirements and expectations of the schools and universities that often have few if any internal resources.

6:00 pm - 6:45 pm
Vendor World Premiere – HP

Blades-The Next Wave
Efrain Rovira, Vice President of HP Industry Standard Servers-Americas, will talk about the Blade technology as the next revenue opportunity for partners to adopt and embrace. He will also discuss key trends and offer HP’s perspectives on how to take advantage of this exciting new market.

(1) - Code Blue: Health Care Prescriptions
Moderator: Larry Walsh, VARBusiness Editor & Cristina McEachern, VARBusiness Associate Managing Editor
In the future, doctors will give patients devices that will diagnose health conditions and monitor status. Hospitals are already using highly integrated wireless infrastructures to transmit information to different departments. And physician practices are sending prescriptions to pharmacies electronically. All of this is possible because of integrated systems. Learn about the opportunities in the burgeoning health care market and what the future holds for enterprising integrators.

(2) - Beyond the Warehouse: Distributors Role in the Government Channel
Moderator: Alan Bechara, president of PC Mall Gov with Jill Aitoro, GovernmentVAR Senior Editor
The government channel is difficult to navigate even for the most seasoned vendors and solution providers. The sales cycles are long, the project requirements are extensive, and the bureaucracy is overwhelming. Distributors see themselves as the ideal partners in cracking the government market. They can provide leads, pre- and post-sales support, logistical and inventory control and lines of credit. Find out how distributors are helping vendors and solution providers gain a greater share of the government market, and what more they could be doing.
